10 Fun Things to Do in Tampa Bay When You Want to Skip the Crowds

Not everyone who dislikes crowds wants to spend their weekends in silence and solitude. Loving adventure, sports, trying new experiences with friends, or planning unusual dates doesn't mean you're comfortable being surrounded by large numbers of strangers. The problem is simply that popular Tampa Bay activities on weekends can mean long lines, packed parking lots, and dozens of people around you.

Fortunately, you don't have to go where everyone else is going to have a good time in Tampa Bay. You can choose an activity where you're more focused on the game, the route, or your own company than on how many people are around you. Here are ten ideas that work well for both locals and those who want to see Tampa Bay from a less touristy side.

1. Rent a kayak or paddleboard and get out on the water

If the thought of a crowded beach doesn't appeal to you, that doesn't mean you have to give up on water activities. Kayaking or paddleboarding lets you spend a few hours outdoors without being tied to one packed beach. You're not just lying by the water – you're constantly moving and can explore the area at your own pace.

Although this is a fairly obvious and popular way to spend time in Tampa Bay, even when you're with a group, it still gives you a certain amount of personal space and privacy. And if you have your own gear, you can plan your own scenic routes.

This is one of those activities that can easily become a regular hobby: each time, you can choose a new route or try a different type of equipment.

In September, however, it's worth remembering that hurricane season in Florida is still underway. Before heading out on the water, it's important to check not only the temperature but also thunderstorms, wind, water conditions, and warnings about dangerous conditions. Our water safety guide for hurricane season can help you quickly review the basic rules.

2. Turn an ordinary city walk into a scavenger hunt

You've probably already been to Downtown Tampa, Ybor City, or other popular neighborhoods. But when was the last time you explored them not just for the sake of walking around, but with a specific mission?

Urban scavenger hunts, self-guided quests, and similar formats turn familiar streets into a game board. You have to find certain objects, solve clues, notice architectural details, or complete challenges.

For a local, this is an especially good way to see a familiar neighborhood from a new perspective. For a date or a get-together with friends, this kind of activity also works better than another “let's just sit somewhere” plan.

3. Get on a bike and explore a neighborhood you haven't visited in a while

A bike is one of the easiest ways to get away from crowds without going far outside Tampa Bay. Instead of heading to the most popular tourist spot, choose a neighborhood you've been meaning to explore and map out a route for a few hours.

It could be a ride along the water, a route through green spaces, or a combination of several neighborhoods with stops for coffee or food. On a bike, you can see much more than you would on foot while still not having to follow the pace of an organized tour.

If you need some inspiration for a route, start with our article about Tampa Bay bike trails.

And Tampa Riverwalk can be viewed as just one option: it's used not only by tourists but also by locals who run, walk, and bike there. We covered more about how this part of the city, which has become one of its signatures, came to be in our article about the history of Tampa Riverwalk.

4. Put together your own team for an escape room

An escape room is a good option if you want an active activity but the weather outside isn't cooperating with outdoor plans. You don't have to make your way through crowds or wait for a ride to become available: you show up with your own group and get your own game.

Instead of physical activity, this is all about logic, observation, and teamwork. You have to search for hidden objects, identify patterns, unlock things, and solve all the puzzles before the game ends.

For locals, this is especially convenient because an escape room doesn't have to be saved for a special occasion. It can be a regular night out with friends, a date, or a way to celebrate a birthday without throwing a big party.

5. Have a bowling night

Bowling may seem like an obvious choice, but that's exactly its advantage. You don't have to wait for a festival, concert, or special event to have a good night out.

Get a few friends together, have a little competition, or just play without any intention of setting a record. It's more active than a typical dinner, but it doesn't require any special level of physical fitness.

Bowling also works great as a backup plan on a hot or rainy day. Instead of canceling your plans because of the weather, you can simply move them indoors.

6. Try an activity that's a little scary

Not liking crowds doesn't mean you don't like adrenaline. Ziplining, climbing, aerial courses, and other adventure activities can be a great alternative to crowded attractions.

Here, your attention naturally stays focused on what you're doing yourself: making your way through an obstacle, climbing higher, overcoming a fear of heights, or trying a route that initially seemed more difficult than you expected.

These activities are especially good for groups of friends who want more than just dinner and conversation and would rather share an experience they'll have something to remember afterward.

7. Try a new sport instead of another tourist attraction

Sometimes the best activity is one you can come back to next week.

Pickleball, tennis, golf, roller skating, batting cages, and other sports activities can become more than just a Saturday plan – they can turn into a new local hobby. For someone who lives in Tampa Bay, that's much more useful than a list of ten attractions you can visit once.

Plus, playing a sport doesn't necessarily mean serious training. You can simply rent the equipment, try a new game with friends, and decide whether you'd like to make it a regular activity.

8. Find a workshop where you can make something yourself

Not every activity has to make you run, jump, or compete. Sometimes a great way to avoid crowds is to replace passively watching entertainment with actually taking part in it.

Cooking classes, art classes, creative workshops, and other hands-on events give you a chance to spend a few hours focused on a specific activity. You're not just sitting and watching what's happening onstage – you're creating something yourself.

This is an especially good option for people who like trying new things: today it might be a cooking class, and next time it could be an art workshop. This way of spending your time can also unexpectedly introduce you to a new interest or hobby.

9. Have a wildlife challenge

Tampa Bay offers a great opportunity to turn something that's usually considered just a walk outdoors into an actual activity.

Try creating your own wildlife challenge: how many bird species can you spot in one outing? Can you find a turtle? Which coastal animals can you photograph?

This format works especially well for families, couples, and groups of friends. You don't need to be an experienced birdwatcher – all you need is some curiosity, binoculars, or a camera with a good zoom.

And once you start paying closer attention to birds, you'll find that even an ordinary walk near the water can turn into a little expedition. In our articles, we've covered how to tell gulls from terns, why frigatebirds rarely land on the water, how to identify birds by their flight and silhouette, and where to look for some of Tampa Bay's most interesting feathered residents. So before your wildlife challenge, you can check out our articles about Tampa Bay birds and head out with a specific list of species to find.

10. Go on a sunset cruise or dolphin-watching tour

The water is one of Tampa Bay's biggest advantages, but you don't have to spend the day on a crowded beach to enjoy it. A sunset cruise, dolphin-watching tour, or short boat ride lets you spend a few hours outdoors surrounded by open water.

These trips typically have a set route and duration, so you don't have to plan the entire day yourself. You can simply get on the boat, take in the coastline, look for dolphins, and enjoy the sunset. For a date, a get-together with friends, or a small family adventure, it's a more interesting alternative to an ordinary walk by the water. If you're specifically planning a dolphin-watching tour, check out our article “The Best Places to Watch Dolphins” ahead of time to get a better idea of where you're most likely to see dolphins in Tampa Bay.

Before booking, it's worth checking the group size, boat format, and weather cancellation policy. In September, it's also important to keep hurricane season in mind and check the forecast ahead of your trip.

You don't have to choose between two extremes: spending the day at the region's most touristy spot or staying home in front of the TV. There are always new ways to enjoy the city and the bay you call home.
