Travel Back to 1890s Florida

Tucked away on the grounds of the Florida State Fairgrounds is a place where time seems to stand still. Cracker Country is an open-air history museum that recreates life in rural Florida during the late 1800s and early 1900s. Stroll down the streets of a historic Florida town, step inside a one-room schoolhouse, church, post office, or railroad depot, and discover what daily life was like for the state's early settlers long before modern cities transformed the landscape.

Unlike many traditional museums, most of the historic buildings at Cracker Country are open for visitors to explore. Many of the structures were relocated from communities across Florida and carefully restored. Inside, you'll find period-accurate interiors furnished with authentic furniture, household items, and tools that were used more than a century ago.

During special events, costumed living-history interpreters bring the village to life by demonstrating everyday pioneer skills, including open-fire cooking, blacksmithing, weaving, woodworking, and other trades that were essential to life in early Florida.

A visit typically takes one to two hours. Some of the highlights include:

Each building tells its own story about the people who helped shape Florida in the late 19th century.

The museum is at its liveliest during the annual Florida State Fair, when historical reenactors, hands-on demonstrations, and traditional craft workshops fill the grounds. Throughout the year, Cracker Country also hosts themed events, educational programs, and seasonal festivals, although access to some buildings may vary depending on the day's schedule.

Located at the Florida State Fairgrounds in Tampa, about a 15-20 minute drive from downtown, Cracker Country is a great destination for both history enthusiasts and families with children. Rather than simply viewing exhibits, visitors can experience firsthand how Florida's early craftsmen lived and worked more than 100 years ago.

It's one of Tampa Bay's lesser-known attractions – a place where you can leave the modern city behind for a few hours and step into Old Florida, when life revolved around farms, the railroad, and small rural communities.
