Baseball fans are in for one of the most emotional sporting events of the summer. From July 10-12, the Tampa Bay Rays will host Longo's Legacy Weekend, a special celebration honoring Evan Longoria, the greatest player in franchise history. During the weekend, Longoria will officially be inducted into the Rays Hall of Fame, and his iconic No. 3 jersey will be permanently retired.

Why Evan Longoria Means So Much to the Rays

When Longoria made his MLB debut in 2008, the Rays were just beginning their transformation from perennial underdogs into legitimate contenders. In his rookie season, he helped lead the club to its first-ever World Series appearance and was named the American League Rookie of the Year.

Over ten seasons with the Rays, Longoria was selected to the All-Star Game three times, won three Gold Glove Awards, earned a Silver Slugger Award, and became the face of the franchise for an entire generation of fans. His unforgettable walk-off home run in the final game of the 2011 regular season – known simply as Game 162 – remains one of the most iconic moments in Rays history.

What to Expect During Longo's Legacy Weekend

The celebration is about much more than baseball.

Throughout the weekend, fans can explore art installations and chalk murals highlighting Longoria's career, snap photos at a special mural near the stadium, shop for exclusive Longo's Legacy Weekend merchandise, try to catch commemorative game-used baseballs featuring event branding, and collect one of three limited-edition posters that come together to create a single illustration celebrating Longoria's career.

Saturday, July 11

The weekend's biggest ceremony takes place before Saturday's game, when Evan Longoria will officially be inducted into the Tampa Bay Rays Hall of Fame. Fans are encouraged to arrive early so they don't miss the pregame festivities.

The first 10,000 fans through the gates will also receive a commemorative Longo cap.

Sunday, July 12

The weekend concludes with the official retirement of No. 3, ensuring that no future Rays player will ever wear Longoria's jersey number again.

One of the most meaningful moments of the ceremony will be a live performance by Tantric, playing "Down and Out," the song Longoria used as his walk-up music for many years. After the game, the band will perform a free concert at a popular bar near the stadium.

Even if you don't closely follow Major League Baseball, Longo's Legacy Weekend is a great opportunity to experience a Rays game for the first time. Jersey retirement ceremonies are rare, and they often become community-wide celebrations that bring generations of fans together.

For longtime supporters, it's a chance to relive some of the greatest moments in franchise history. For newcomers to the Tampa Bay area, it's an opportunity to better understand one of the region's most important sports traditions.

Longo's Legacy Weekend is about more than two regular-season games. It's a celebration of an era that helped shape the modern Tampa Bay Rays and left a lasting mark on Florida baseball.
