Crystal-Clear Water, Wild Monkeys, and the Famous Glass-Bottom Boats

Silver Springs is one of the largest artesian springs in the world. Surrounded by dense forests, it's home to wild monkeys along the riverbanks, water so clear you can see deep into the underwater world, and the iconic glass-bottom boats that have become the area's signature attraction.

Long before Orlando became famous for its theme parks, Silver Springs was one of Florida's most popular tourist attractions.

Scenes from Tarzan films, classic adventure movies, and television series were filmed here. The spring's crystal-clear water made underwater filming possible long before modern camera equipment existed, making Silver Springs a favorite natural filming location for directors.

Silver Springs is also considered the birthplace of the glass-bottom boat tour. The first excursions began here in the 1870s – long before most of Florida's modern tourist attractions even existed.

During the tour, the boat glides directly over the springs while passengers look through large glass panels built into the floor. Instead of murky river water, you'll see an incredible underwater landscape: sandy bottoms, limestone formations, underwater caverns, lush aquatic vegetation, schools of fish, and countless streams of bubbles rising continuously from the natural springs.

Even if you've kayaked in crystal-clear water before, this experience feels completely different because it reveals an underwater world that's usually hidden beneath the surface.

Every day, Silver Springs releases hundreds of millions of gallons of crystal-clear water. The water temperature remains remarkably consistent throughout the year at about 72°F (22°C). Thanks to this constant flow, the water stays exceptionally clear, with visibility sometimes exceeding 65 feet. That's one of the reasons Silver Springs has attracted researchers, photographers, and nature lovers for more than a century.

The river is calm, with barely noticeable currents, and is lined with towering cypress trees, live oaks draped in Spanish moss, and dense forests. Along the way, you may spot manatees during the cooler months, river otters, turtles, alligators, countless bird species, and – if you're lucky – the area's famous monkeys.

The water is so clear that even while casually paddling a kayak, you can easily see fish swimming below and underwater plants swaying with the current. For many visitors, kayaking is the main reason to visit Silver Springs.

One of the most surprising features of Silver Springs is its colony of wild rhesus macaques.

They aren't native to Florida. The monkeys were introduced in the 1930s to create an exotic atmosphere for sightseeing tours. Over time, they escaped and established a thriving population in the forests along the Silver River.

Today, you may spot them while exploring the river by boat or kayak. However, park staff strongly advise visitors not to approach or feed them. These are wild animals, and their behavior can be unpredictable.

Beyond glass-bottom boat tours and kayaking, the park offers dozens of miles of hiking trails, bike paths, a campground, and picnic areas, making it easy to spend an entire day here. For example, you can take a glass-bottom boat tour in the morning, paddle a kayak in the afternoon, and finish the day with a peaceful walk along one of the forest trails.

The park also features a museum dedicated to the history of Silver Springs.
