Clearwater Marine Aquarium is one of Florida’s most renowned marine animal rescue and rehabilitation centers, providing care each year for dolphins, manatees, sea turtles, pelicans, and many other coastal species.

Unlike most aquariums, Clearwater Marine Aquarium was established primarily as a rehabilitation facility for injured and sick marine animals. The organization operates as a nonprofit institution dedicated to rescue, treatment, research, and conservation programs. Many animals are released back into the ocean after recovering, while those whose injuries prevent them from surviving in the wild remain under the aquarium’s care for the rest of their lives.

The aquarium opened in 1972 in a former water treatment facility near Clearwater Beach. The large tanks and infrastructure of the former industrial complex proved ideal for rehabilitating marine wildlife.

Winter the Dolphin: A Story That Inspired the World

The aquarium’s most famous resident was Winter the dolphin. In 2005, she was found entangled in the ropes of a crab trap. Her injuries were so severe that she lost her tail, but veterinarians and engineers worked together to create a specialized prosthetic tail for her. Winter’s story became a symbol of perseverance and hope for people with disabilities around the world.

Her remarkable journey inspired the feature film Dolphin Tale and its sequel, Dolphin Tale 2, both of which were partially filmed at the aquarium. Following the success of the movies, Clearwater Marine Aquarium became one of the most visited attractions in the Tampa Bay region.

Today, visitors can explore an interactive exhibit dedicated to Winter, featuring her prosthetic tails, movie memorabilia, and the story of her rescue and recovery.

In addition to dolphins, the aquarium is home to manatees, sea turtles, otters, pelicans, nurse sharks, stingrays, and a variety of fish species native to the Gulf of Mexico. In 2024, the facility also opened a state-of-the-art manatee rehabilitation center, significantly expanding its ability to care for these vulnerable marine mammals.

During a visit, guests can do much more than simply observe the animals. They can learn how a real marine hospital operates, watch animal training and feeding sessions, take behind-the-scenes tours of the veterinary facilities, hear inspiring rescue stories, and participate in interactive educational programs designed for children.

A Center That Makes a Real Difference

One of the aquarium’s most important missions is returning animals to their natural habitats. The staff regularly rescues, rehabilitates, and releases sea turtles and other marine animals back into the wild. In recent years alone, dozens of turtles affected by cold stress, illness, or human activity have successfully recovered and been returned to the ocean.
