813 Day: Celebrating Tampa's Iconic Area Code

Every year on August 13, Tampa residents celebrate a unique holiday known as 813 Day. It's not tied to a historic event or an official public holiday. Instead, its name comes from the city's area code, which has long become a symbol of local pride.

On this day, restaurants, shops, museums, sports teams, and cultural venues host special promotions, concerts, festivals, and charitable events. For visitors, it's a great opportunity to experience Tampa through the eyes of locals, while for residents, it's another reason to support local businesses and enjoy the city's festive atmosphere.

The 813 area code was introduced in 1953 and originally covered much of Central and West Florida. As the population grew, its boundaries gradually changed, and today it primarily serves Hillsborough County, including Tampa.

Even after new area codes were introduced, 813 remained one of the city's most recognizable symbols. You'll find it on T-shirts, hats, coffee mugs, car decals, and even in the names of local businesses. For many residents, these three numbers represent far more than an area code – they're a badge of Tampa pride, making August 13 a natural fit for the city's unofficial holiday.

Unlike large festivals, 813 Day doesn't have a single organizer or one central venue. Instead, dozens of local businesses, restaurants, coffee shops, retailers, sports teams, and cultural organizations take part in the celebration.

Across the city, you'll find outdoor concerts, themed parties, artisan markets, family-friendly events, performances by local musicians, and activities for kids. Many businesses create one-day-only specials, including themed menu items, discounts, complimentary tastings, or giveaways for visitors.

Local nonprofits often participate as well. A portion of proceeds from sales or special promotions is frequently donated to community initiatives, allowing the celebration to combine entertainment with an opportunity to give back.

As in previous years, many of the main events will take place in popular destinations throughout the city, including Hyde Park Village, Midtown Tampa, Sparkman Wharf, Water Street Tampa, and other public gathering spaces. These locations typically host live music, local vendor markets, food-focused events, and family activities.

Local restaurants, coffee shops, breweries, and retailers also traditionally join the celebration with special 813 Day promotions. The lineup changes every year, so even people who have celebrated before can always discover something new.

The 2026 813 Day schedule is still growing, but several major celebration hubs have already been announced.

Hyde Park Village will once again serve as one of the main centers of the celebration. Visitors can look forward to a day dedicated to the local community, featuring wellness activities, family entertainment, exclusive offers from shops and restaurants, and charitable initiatives supporting local organizations. Many Hyde Park Village businesses will offer discounts and promotions available only on August 13.

Another featured location will be the Unlock Tampa Bay Visitors Center in downtown Tampa. Its 813 Day Bash will include food from local restaurants, products from regional vendors, photo opportunities with mascots from Tampa Bay's professional sports teams, and prize giveaways. Early visitors will also receive an exclusive T-shirt created especially for this year's celebration.

Organizers have also announced numerous special offers from restaurants, coffee shops, bars, and retailers across Tampa. As in previous years, many businesses will offer food, drinks, or merchandise for the symbolic price of $8.13, with the final list of promotions typically released just a few days before the event.

As in previous years, dozens of local businesses, cultural organizations, and community groups are expected to participate. That's one of the reasons why even longtime 813 Day attendees discover new places and events to enjoy each year.

Many businesses announce their promotions only a few days before the celebration, so it's worth keeping an eye on their social media pages.

If you'd like to experience the spirit of 813 Day, Hyde Park Village is a great place to start. It traditionally draws large crowds of local residents and features independent boutiques, live music, and a variety of entertainment throughout the day.

If you enjoy modern urban destinations, Water Street Tampa and Sparkman Wharf are great choices, with concerts, food markets, and evening events often taking place throughout the celebration. Those interested in exploring Tampa's local food scene should also check out restaurants and breweries in Seminole Heights, Ybor City, and Downtown Tampa, as many of them prepare special offers just for August 13.

Since the celebration takes place across multiple neighborhoods, it's easy to create your own itinerary and spend the day discovering different parts of the city.

813 Day isn't Florida's biggest celebration or a major tourist festival. Instead, it's a celebration of local spirit and the love people have for their hometown.
