For citizens, advocates, and anyone who wants their voice to be heard.
Can a handwritten letter change someone’s mind? This workshop with instructor Randy Rosenthal explores the surprising science behind persuasive communication and how thoughtful writing can help move conversations and communities in a new direction.
Even when we have facts on our side, convincing someone to reconsider their views isn't always easy. You'll explore why fact-based arguments can fall flat, what motivates people to hold opinions different from your own, and how to communicate in ways that make others more open to a different perspective.
You'll learn an evidence-based approach called the Four Moves of a Persuasive Letter and see how it can turn a well-intentioned lecture into a message people are more willing to hear. Then, you'll put the method into practice by writing a letter of your own by hand.
Research has found measurable effects from handwritten letters to fellow citizens in randomized trials. The slower pace of handwriting is part of the process: it encourages more deliberate thinking, demonstrates personal effort, and helps build the patience needed for long-term civic engagement.
All materials are provided, including stationery, pens, a handout explaining the Four Moves, and a sample letter to inspire your writing. You'll leave with a completed letter that's ready to send.
